With us today is the wonderfully talented Alaska. A local model in Spokane, she has the skills, personality and looks.
What was the most interesting aspect of being a model?
The most interesting part of being a model (for me) is getting to experience photographic creativity. I’ve worked with a good handful of photographers, and I love how each of them is different and creative in their own way. I love talking to each and every photographer and learning about what inspires them. Being an artist myself, I also enjoy coming up with creative ideas for photoshoots.
As a model you’re offered jobs of all kinds, what kind do you love the most?
PAID JOBS! Haha, totally kidding. It is very nice when I get to make money for what I love doing, but when it comes to fun and excitement really enjoy high fashion/editorial photoshoots. Fashion is my number one interest, and so naturally I love stylizing photoshoots and building fun, in style, or avant garde outfits. In my experience, I haven’t been able to do that at paid photoshoots. In my first photoshoot with Eric Barro, I was able to put together 7 colorful outfits!
Where are you hoping to go with this? Is it your forever job or are there other things you hope to achieve?
As much as I would love to be able to earn a living as a professional model, I am actually going to school at Whitworth University to study International Business and Japanese. My career goal is to someday be able to work in the international fashion market (between the United States and Japan) or become a creative marketing director for a company. Of course, I am interested in countless other things, too, and I can never make up my mind. I’m debating on minoring in sociology, psychology, graphic design, or political science. Overall, being a part time model is fun, but I have so many other career endeavors in mind, as well.
In your own words, what is the difference between style and fashion?
In my opinion, fashion is popularized clothing choices whereas style is individualized clothing choices. People do not always follow fashion trends- sometimes I love blending things that are out of “fashion” (such as fanny packs) with things that are on trend(like colored skinny jeans). Style is taking fashion trends and making them your own.
Big, Small, Well Known or Unknown… What 3 designers do you work to stay current with?
I am definitely a follower of Marc Jacobs. I love his style, patterns, advertising, and his perfume (Daisy)! I just recently stole my mom’s Marc Jacob’s purse! I also follow Prada. To me, Prada is both daring and classic. And lastly, I would love to give a shout out to Rachel Mace of Totally Trashed Fashion. I suppose I am stuck following her now because she recently decided to include me in her next line. I think it will be an awesome experience!
Is there one photo you love over any other?
Not going to lie, I am obsessed with this one photo that Scott Martinez took of me a while back. I think it’s classy, yet sexy. Shasta Hankins did a wonderful job on my makeup, too
Fittings, travel, photo shoots… What element is the part you love over everything else?
Photoshoots provide me with neverending fun, so I would definitely say that photoshoots are my favorite element of modeling. I love getting to know both obscure and well-known photographers!
What advice would you give to other models?
The best advice that I can give to other models is to stay humble! Never assume that everyone wants to work with you. Modeling has many sad truths, and one of them is that you can’t please every photographer, designer, ect. I am lucky that I have worked with some of the best photographers in Spokane even though I am shorter than the average model. Another piece of advice that I have is invest in a great wardrobe! More clothes will yield more interesting photoshoot looks for building your portfolio. Try different styles- elegant, casual, boho, dark and mysterious, sexy, punk.. whatever! Thrift stores are the best because you can get a lot of clothes for not a lot of money.
Any final words?
Thanks for interviewing me, Kristy! 🙂
